If you can come up with a better title with a reference to a Darth, let me know. I was reading my buddy Michel's review on the cube and his experience driving around in it. In a nutshell, he didn't feel very manly behind the wheel of the diminutive mail truck. When it comes to the BMW X6, the experience registers at the other end of the spectrum.

Agreed, few road-going vehicles exude more manliness than a virile pickup but for the more sophisticated amongst us, a BMW X6 is a good place to start. Although often referred to as an ugly duckling, there is no doubting the X6's machismo, especially in “M” guise. As for the driver, that's a whole other story...

The Magical M
When you check the “M” box as you place your order for your spankin' new X6, you are setting yourself up for many things. From the word go, you must prepare for driving one of the most badass CUVs on the planet, especially when clad in black sapphire metallic. Those that will be bold enough to stare the X6 M in the face will first be hypnotized by its kind angel eyes only to then be frightened by its Imperial-Storm-Trooper-gone-mad front fascia.

My tester was unfortunately delivered still shod with winter tires albeit on 19” M wheels. The standard 20” M double spoke alloys look far more convincing when filling the large wheel arches and composing with the massive disc brakes. From its profile, onlookers will detect a sense of purpose in its coupe-like silhouette, not mistaking it for a vulgar SUV. Coming around to the rear, the signature “M” double-twin tailpipes are a visual testament to the M's real potential.

That's all good and all but the fact remains that the X6 is ugly as sin. It's from the “B” pillar on that this Sports Activity Coupé crumbles away into absurdity for me. I like rising beltlines, reduced glass surfaces but the sheer height of the X6's hips curving into its large buttocks simply doesn't sit well. Laced in M-ness, the X6 is easier to digest and perhaps if mine had been rollin' on the 20”, it would have fared better. That leaves the 35i, 50i and ActiveHybrid though...

From my vantage point on the driver's seat, the x6's dash is neat, uncluttered and all-business. (Photo: Matthieu Lambert/Auto123.com)
