Audi A3 has a largely satisfied owner community
Check the condition of the clutch on models equipped with manual transmissions. Though clutch wear is largely a function of the previous owners driving habits, some have reported ‘premature’ clutch wear. If the pedal won’t return from the floor, or the gearbox ‘grinds’ during shifting, it may be best to move to another model.

Hard, inconsistent or ‘sloppy’ shifting from the Direct Shift Gearbox (DSG) may be caused by a faulty computer control or ‘mechatronics’ unit which controls this advanced transmission.

Long term reliability of the DSG gearbox is currently unclear. If you want millisecond gearshift speeds and race-car sound effects, opt for it. If you’re happy driving a manual, stick to your guns.

Note that sporadic acceleration or a ‘lumpy’ feel to the engine’s power delivery could be related to faulty or failing ignition coils, which are a common problem on numerous VW/Audi engines.

Finally, have an Audi or VW mechanic inspect the turbocharger system for signs of excessive wear or oil consumption on higher-mileage or modified models.

End of the day, there are more affordable and reliable ways to get around than the A3—though a largely satisfied owner community suggests that the potential issues are far outweighed by the rewarding driving experience.
