Visibility is good thanks to the high seats offering a commanding view of the road ahead. If you're more into comfort than performance, this Lincoln will please you with a soft suspension delivering a smooth ride and friendly cornering maneuvers. Another thing you'll definitely like about the MKX is the limited road noise and overall quietness inside. However, the factory tires should be replaced as they have a strong tendency to screech when pushed a bit too enthusiastically.

To do and to do well
As mentioned, the Lincoln MKX shares its powertrain with the Ford Edge. In reality, there's not much to argue against the 265-hp 3.5L V6, which delivers pleasant, linear accelerations. Upon reaccelerating, however, the engine is all but subtle. Of course, in normal daily driving, it does a great job... provided that you're not asking too much of it. I should also point out that fuel economy is slightly below the average in the premium crossover segment.

The steering is well calibrated, offering a certain dynamic feel and a particularly short turning radius. The brakes are effective at stopping the vehicle with no hesitation during emergency maneuvers.

In terms of handling, though, the MKX is handicapped by its height and width. Fortunately, the all-wheel drive system works great and is not too intrusive, offering a safe, danger-free driving experience in all conditions.

A nice accomplishment
The 2008 Lincoln MKX represents a commendable effort by Ford to take a piece of the lucrative premium compact SUV/CUV pie -- certainly more so than its predecessor, the Aviator. The design is unique, albeit a tad too similar to the Edge, but it's still well-executed. A couple of details, like the exaggerated front grille, take away a bit of charisma, but overall, the MKX proves to be pretty solid in almost every respect.

It no doubt has some obvious qualities and value. Fuel economy could be improved a little, but overall performance is pleasant. All in all, this is a good pick, but not one without a few asterisks...
