The Chevrolet Optra was available to Canadian shoppers as a wagon, hatchback or sedan model that promised a fun to drive character, flexibility and fuel efficiency on a budget.

It was intended towards owners looking for a sensible family car or fuel-friendly second runabout that offered the adaptability required to help tackle day to day life.

The short-lived model was effectively a re-badged Daewoo, imported from Korea and given a new life wearing the famous bow tie in front and back. Yet another exercise in badge transplantation, the American automaker hoped their disguised Korean offering would win over the hearts of the active and budget-minded.

Optra power came solely from a two-litre four cylinder engine which made scarcely 120 horsepower. No surprises for transmission choices- drivers could choose to shift via a four-speed automatic or a five-speed manual, driving the front wheels in either case.

You'll find available equipment to include a sunroof, premium audio system, ABS brakes, air conditioning, fog lamps, side airbags, cruise control and more. Needless to say, with a variety of optional hardware and body styles, Optra had selection covered off sufficiently well.

According to owners, it's the same story with interior space. Optra drivers polled online frequently reported interior space and access as one of the vehicle's more appreciable attributes- especially in wagon and hatchback models.

Driving dynamics were generally well rated by owners too- and many reported satisfaction with the handling and braking performance for such an inexpensive vehicle. You'll likely want to invest in a model with ABS brakes though- as most owners noted feeling less than confident when stopping on slippery surfaces in winter.

Comfort and styling round out the Optra's list of positive owner-reported attributes.
