My Wife and I are shopping for a new and small SUV, our 3 finalists are: the Hyundai Santa Fe(4cyl, 2wd), Suzuki Vitara (4cyl, 4WD) and Kia Sportage (4wd, 4cyl).

Can you help us choose the right one?

I've heard of too many horror stories with Kia Sephias, Spectras, Rios... Not to mention the problems that Hyundai is having with their engine ratings and their automatic transmissions and also how quickly these products depreciate... I would stay away from all Korean products until they prove to be reliable and worth owning. Stick with Vitara; it's been around for a long time and is a known vehicle... just watch out for the Suzuki dealers.

We test them all...see our review at this site. The Santa Fe easily. But why not just get a wagon? It costs less, has more power, and is easier to live with.

I Highly recomend the Santa Fe, but would go for the 2.7 V6 2WD
I bought one in early June, The 4 cyl is a bit noisy, and lacks power, I'm avg 10 ls / 100 k combo highway /City

Do yourselves a favour - do not buy your SUV until you have test-driven the new Hyundai Tucson. I test drove every new SUV out there and the Tucson drives better than most, comes with a lot more luxury items and is the only small SUV that gives you: 4 wheel discs/4 channel ABS/Traction Control/Stability Control/V6 engine/103.6 wheelbase(comfort) and tons more. Even little nice touches like visor extentions, dual chrome tailpipes, 6-spoke alloy wheels and larger tires than the rest. And all this with a 100,000km bumper to bumper and 120,000km powertrain warranty. If you're worried about quality, Hyundai was just placed next after Honda in quality ratings. If you're still worried, just read the Tucson road test on this site, it's very highly rated. I just bought one and got a really good deal considering it is a new model; Hyundai is really aggressively trying to prove to the world that can not only compete but beat the competition. The only competition they have for quality right now is Honda and Toyota; forget about anything from Ford or GM or Mazda(SUV's). Hyundai simply blows them away. Forget about Jeep too, unless you enjoy waiting and drinking shitty coffee in a repair shop every other week.
