Do they use much road salt in your area in the winter? If so, oh hell ya!

Actually, I've heard they don't use much salt on Alberta roads. This true? :?

As a rule of thumb, the longer you plan on keeping the car, the more you should consider rustproofing it.

One of my VW (a 1992) comes from Alberta and the car is mint. I'm assuming that they don't use road salt or very very little.

A good treatment can help retain a stronger resale value but recent GMs are pretty about rust.

So, in the end, you decide.

Isn't it just a sale gimmick? I thought most cars were undercoated already.

I had a 2000 Impala. I sold it last year and I didn't have any problems with the underneath. I ride the highways everyday.

Many are coated but only in the most obvious places. The corners and spots you can't see can also accumulate calcium and salt and eventually rust.

I firmly believe in rustproofing.

interesting topic. i had a conversation with a toyota sales manager last year that said it was pointless here in california north. they still ask everyone that they sell a car to. big bucks selling stuff like that.
of course, it only snows here once or twice a year. in ontario and quebec i'd rustproof. i've heard good things about some aftermarket r'proofers.

The original poster of this thread lists his location as "Lethbridge, Alberta". It so happens that I too am from "L.A." :D

At least, I split my time between Calgary and Lethbridge... It's a great prearie city, thrid biggest in the province, after Edmonton and Calgary!

What you say makes sense. The further south you go, rustproofing becomes less of a necessity.
