will anyone buy the new chevy cobalt ss ? i think it looks awesome, and the 18" wheels and 205 hp supercharged engine sounds neat, but with insurance costs strangling young buyers, will the car be successful in canada ?

At 24 995$, I think it a great deal. It`s even cheaper than the Ion Redline. If it has tuning potential, like the SRT-4, it should sell well enough.

It might look great but GM has a history of putting out a new vehicle that has various reliability problems. The consumer ends up with a lemon the first year just like they did when the new Mailibu came out a few years back.

Wait a year. Most of the issues, if any, will surface in that period of time. GM will proceed with the necessary recalls and service bulletins to fix the problems.

That goes for all models, IMO.

Well, the CobaltSS is basically the same car as the Ion Redline. I could not get a straight answer from Saturn if the improvements put in the Cobalt were included in that version at a higher price.
Check out the Redline for comparison with the rearward opening back doors and easy entry if you are older or hve more friends or stuff to carry. Judging by the Redline I think it's a really nice civilized version of a musclecar. TheRedline performed so well and was so comfortable that even the non-coupe guy like me seriously jconsidered it, and then finally decided it was too youthful for an older guy.

There is no denying that it will attract a younger crowd. I just saw one at a GM dealer earlier today. I think it's pretty hot.

I agree. That's a good-looking car, with horsepower to back up its sporty looks.
I'd say: but cheaper wheels, lose the rear wing, take out some unessential standard features, create a "stripper" SS and sell it for $19,995.

My fiancee bought an '05 Chevy Cobalt LS, fully loaded for 23k and change CAD (on lease) without first consulting me. She took her father with her instead (who I've found knows SQUAT about vehicles)
Since this was the first model year, I would have advised her against the purchase (especially on a 4 yr lease where you can't buy it out until after the 3rd year).
Now I will admit the car is rather nice. It's fun to drive, the stereo sounds deadly (optional 7 speaker pioneer) considering it's relatively low power output, and all in all is worth the cost. (5 speed getrag woulda been nicer)
And as you were expecting here's the but...
...the motor needed replacement after only 4k due to a manufacturing defect in the block itself, major PITA.
Also, the upholstery started pulling away from the curve in the armrests and around the power groups on either side after only 1 week. And now, (the car is approx 8 months old) the paint on the face panels in the center console is starting to bubble and crack. The sunroof switch is clumsy at best and it now seems to be tilting to face the passener side of the car.
Also be wary if you have the power group inserts fixed (they added some sort of rubber o ring around the plastic that keeps the upholstery from pulling away) and behold the power mirror controls sink down and to the right when you try to use them.
Although we've had more than our share of problems with this vehicle, chevy has done an outstanding job in the customer care department, replacing or repairing everything at no cost, even a few items not covered under warranty seeing as the car has become a more significant liability than it should have been.
