Thats a proper mature looking sedan. I like the clean lines and the fact that its still distinctively german looking, instantly VW when you look inside. Nice to see they have improved but yet stayed focused at the same time. The face is almost sneaky looking in a way, though I find the back to be a little uninspired.
As a matter of personal curiosity, (having never driven a Passat but trying to arrange one soon, and having driven a Maxima which I loved) I wonder which is better or if they are too different to compare. Is it just me or does that Passat have the same lines as the Maxima, starting just above the grille and ending at the trunk, in a front three-quarter shot?
What say you General?
I did a tire kicking of both the new Jetta and Passat. The Passat is nothing short of gorgeous - starting at 28K up to 40+K loaded with everything including an umbrella. Actually - when you first look at both, they are strikingly similar - only the Passat obviously is larger.
I have never driven a VW, but this tire kicking experience has enlightened me. I hear they can be terrible in terms of reliability, but they sure look nice!

The 2004 Maxima SE I drove was generally bad. The seats were uncomfortable, the fit a finish was questionable, handling was average at best but it was damn fast in a straight line. Show me a 2003 Max and I'm in love. A 2004 + turns me right off.
The Passat is by far a superior drive. The 2.0T is great fun and the 3.6L should be even more impressive. The Passat will out-handle the Max and out-brake it as well. It might break down more often but I would be willing to live with that if my choices were limited to these 2 cars.
