Ouch!
The short answer to your question veb is: None of the above.
The enumerated Chrysler vehicles have a below to well below average reliability record. The same can be said about the 2000-02 Focus. Between 1997-99, Ford still had an Escort and it turns out that it was reasonably reliable. The only advantage to these cars will be the later model year for the price. For $6,000, you will find a base 1997-99 Toyota Corolla and maybe a Honda Civic.
We should maybe discuss what your needs are. That way, we can establish choices based on your price / quality criteria.

Actually I look for my first car in Canada. And I did not used to pay so much money for a used car older 7 years. So I look for a good car under 6 000 – 7 000 CAD not older 2000 year.
What your advice?

You're asking a tough question. I'm having a hard time finding a car that will fit your criteria. For $6 000 to $7 000, you'll have to look into a 1998-99 Honda Civic, Toyota Corolla or a Mazda Protegé. Don't fall into the cheaper north american car trap: they will cost you more in maintenance and depreciate very rapidly.

veb, don't get stuck on getting a car thats a 2000 or newer model. a 10 year old civic, corolla, camry, or accord can be very good cars if in good condition. these are very reliable cars. make sure to get your car checked out by a good mechanic. good luck!

and remember that the maintenance costs and repair costs of these japs is astronomically higher than some of the domestic counterparts. Uh General - you're warning of high depreciation on a $6000 domestic car ? How do you think they became $6000 cars ? You think a used Lesabre is going to depreciate more while the 10 year old japs will hold their value forever ? Get a 7 or 8 yr old grand marquis or lesabre - its a no brainer.

...and i'm just trying to get under your skin - a $6000 car is a tough order to fill these days. My point is that some of these boring old sedans have tried and true powertrains and plenty of cheap parts available ( remember that its highly likely that this $6000 car buyer will not be visiting the local toyota or honda dealer for service - expensive service, but probably crappy tire or joe's garage) Its a toughie - carry on - I can only pray that someone doesnt show veb a nice shiny mercury mistake. keep up the good work

If he wants to keep the car for 2 years, his $6,000 american car investment will be woth $3,500 when resale time comes. A $6,000 Japanese will be worth more ($4,500 for example) after 2 years. Obviously, same mileage, maintenace and condition. The amounts are not meant to be "real", only projections.
I do agree with the LeSabre and Grand Marquis suggestions. Make sure that the Mercury has received regular maintenance as they tend to consume oil somewhere north of 120 000 km.
It is tough to find a $6,000 car (year, mileage, condition...) $10,000 would make things easier.

yeah i understand what your saying...but being in the retail end of it i'd bet dollars to doughnuts that this car will be driven until the end of time and a lot of parts and service will be supplied by jimbo's shop and the local wrecker...have a good one - i'm off to work to try to dig up some info on that myth i'm perpetuating about the origins of the vibe and matrix ( and to try to get some decent $6000 trades ) cheers

You're probably right about that. Hence the reason, IMO, that he should get amore reliable car to avoid to many trips to these "honest" garages...
I might agree that a base 2003 Cavalier VL for about $6,000 could be a fair purchase; Balance of warranty... I would only recommend to not return to the dealer for future maintenace... I'm really hesitating here...

doesn't the apa reccommend the sunfires and cavaliers as safe econobox used cars ? someone told me that but i don't know if its true

What they say is that they (Sunfire, Cavalier) are smoother runnig cars since 2002, that they are easy to fix and that cheap parts are easy to find.

For about $6000:
Japs: 1997 Protege or 1996 Accord or 1997 Altima
Patriot: 1998 Saturn SL or 1998 Grand Am or 1998 Intrigue
Suicidal: 1998 Golf or 2000 Daewoo

I total agree with you regarding $ 10 000 and probably I can get good car spent 20 000 or 30 000 :-) :D but this is very easy way….
In addition as I am going to buy my first car in Canada so surely I have no insurance history in Canada and if I bought a new car I will paid astronomical insurance.
As a result I have to buy a used car because I cannot effort insurance (Annual Rate: $4129 http://www.insurancehotline.com/scripts/newquote.pl). :-(((

Ouch. That's a lot of money...
For about $6000:

Thank you, thank you, and thank you!!!
I really waited when we start to speak about real brands and models. I completely believe that some japs car better than some another brands…. But I would like to consider each model particularly. How about Patriot’s group - Chrysler intrepid 1998 – 99? :?:
And another example:
6 years old amers car worth 6 000, through 2 years it will be 3 500. I will lose 2 500
6 years old japs car worth 12 000, through 2 years it will be 7 500. I will lose 4 500
What will be better? :!:
Heigh! Does someone give me any information about good (low month payment :D ) insurance company for newcomer?
Or any way (except “to wait a few years”) how can I decrease my insurance payment? :!: :?: :!:
woohoo!

You'll have to shop around for insurance. Of course, if you haven't driven in Canada yet, they're going to refurnish their offices with your insurance payments...
You might want to drive a used car for a couple of years.

veb.....your 8 year old jap car will be good for another ten years while the US car will start costing you 2 thousand dollars a year to keep on the road.
always buy as much quality as you can afford.

No!
As far as insurance is concerned, you'll have to be patient. Buy a good, older used car, drive for 2 years, have no accidents or claims and then things will work themselves out.
It is well known and documented that North American cars are not as reliable as the Japanese. The Americans are cheaper to buy and insure but are more maintenance and repair intensive. If you don't pay one way, you will pay the other.
Look into a compromise: 1997-1999 Ford Escort.

i agree with the general on that. escorts are a good compromise. sporty model, sedan, or wagon. decent quality. sometimes found for lower prices as well.
general.....what about some of the ford/mazda twins like the probe or maybe the mitsu/chryco, or the geo cars of suzuki/gm partnerships?

general.....what about some of the ford/mazda twins like the probe or maybe the mitsu/chryco, or the geo cars of suzuki/gm partnerships?
The Probe could be interesting but they are 2 door cars. In this case, look into a 626. The Mitsu/Chryco ventures of the late 90s did not produce anything worth looking into. The Geo/Suzuki cars might be a little too small if he started looking at Intrepids...
Few things to watchout.
Can the car record be varified, Milage, maintenance.
Is the car driven by one perosn, hiway or city.
body and mechanical systems, when inspected visualy show good condition, no rust, rust proofing done regularly.
Drive it and listen to any noises, check alignment, tire condition etc.
check for integrity of the body by looking for new seams, major welding, eye ball frame from underneath for it being square.check paint at nooks and cranies to see if it has been painted over and over or not.
And have a reputable mechanic check cylender head pressure.
I hope I am not going overboard, but it is better to check throughly when buying an old car for the peace of mind.
buying an old car is hard work and cannot be left to chance. if u want to buy a good used car. and there are lot of them arround, since many people keep their cars in good conditions. just have to look arround.
