We have seen this before in Canada - when Hyundai first released the Tuscon, our American cousins got the full kit of airbags while the 'Canadian' version of the same vehicle had only front impact airbags. The current model year provides side impact and side curtain airbags on the highest trim level (i.e. GLS) but still excludes them on lower end models. Get this though - the Sportage has had all three since it's re-introduction last year.

Why on earth would they do that?
Why not at least offer it as an option. If they think they will be able to force buyers to upgrade to the top version just to get side curtain airbags, they are seriously miscalculating. I suppose they figure that they can add it next year and say that the consumers wanted that. Well HELLO, that excuse won't cut it. Once you turn off a customer, why in the heck would they come back to you. Geez, I would really like to hear the response from Toyota Canada as to why they made the decision to not allow consumers the choice to get the airbags on the 166 hp Rav4.
