I'm considering buying a 2001 focus wagon , seems like a very prctical car , however I'm concerned about reliability issues , I'm quite handy with minor repairs and don't mind doing them as long as they don't end up costing a fortune ! I'll get one with manual transmission , I've located a few at local used car lots

I would suggest to stay away from any Focus from year-model 2000 to 2002. Serious reliability issues. Unless the car price is very low and you have good mechanic hands, I would not touch this. Year 2003 and more is better. Year 2005 and more is more way better. Yes is a very pratical car offering the most cubic volume in his category.

I agree with the above poster. Avoid the Earliy Focus. You might want to also think about Suzuki Esteem Estate. Great choice If a bit dated, not as nice to drive, But reliable or the Ford Escort Estate Which was a great motor if find a good one. Like all used cars, It all depends on how it was been look after before you got it.
Wow this site seams a bit dead........I just look at the date.

Stay away
Owne a 2002 and I have lot off electrical problem.
Check the wires from the car to the hatch door, pull the black rubber sheat and have a look to the wires , mine where all crack and I had short. So the fuse always burn and finaly when I use the rear wiper the hatch open even when rolling.
Cost to repair 700$ + tx
Ford dont want to take charge of this problem but they should.
