I know there will be some very interesting posts in this one, especially from the likes of Crash...
Here's mine:
1988 Oldsmobile Custom Cruiser

In fact, that is the first one I drove legally. The first car I ever drove was a 1980 Buick Century station wagon on a farm.

This could explain my affinity for wagons...

After a lovely intro like that...I’m going to have tell you!
I learnt to drive at 8 years old on a friend’s farm just outside London, England. My dad let me drive his Jaguar Mk 2 around until I scared him :D He then went out and rented a Vauxhall Viva from hertz or somewhere (he’s a pretty smart man my dad!!!)
As I helped out on the farm, I got to drive the tractors and other stuff around the place for a few years until my dad (who was a builder) went crazy and brought a farm himself, by this time I was about 12 or 13.
The farm, being in a remote area of North Devon, my dad soon got tired of driving me to local youth clubs and young farmer’s club meetings, so he would let me take the farm pickup (a Morris Minor). I was always tall for my age, and I passed for much older, besides, there wasn’t much traffic on the roads.
“Occasionally, the Morris Minor pickup broke down” and he would let me borrow his brand new Daimler Double-Six (the Daimler version of the Jaguar XJ12).
Imagine... no driving license...years under age...and driving an expensive V12 powered dream car! Is it any wonder I went into mechanics after leaving school? I might not have been able to fix much...but I knew more ways to disable a Morris Minor than anyone

See, I knew it!!
A Morris Minor, a Jag mk2 and a Daimler Double Six!
I was 13 when I test-drove the Century...
My earliest memories behind the wheel was in a 1978 Ford Fiesta. I must have been no more than 4 or 5 years old, sitting on my father's lap steering the little brown box around a corner...
Here is a picture of a Fiesta:

My first car in Canada was a Buick Century 2 door, (73-74 model I think). I paid $300 for it and it looked like the one Kojak used in the TV show, it was mud brown with a white roof and had a big dent in the drivers door, I had to climb in the passenger side and slide over.
My sister had a pristine looking Pontiac Firebird Esprit which was gold and had fancy rims. It looked just like the one that Jim Rockford drove in the Rockford files.
My car might have looked like a heap but on main street Brandon, Manitoba... but my Kojak Baldy-Wagon could whip her pretty Rockfords a##
Years later back in the UK, I also had a Ford Fiesta, it was the sporty XR2 version and it was a lively little car as I remember!

First car I ever "drove" - my Dad's old Buick, the "blue witch." I sat on his lap and he let me steer.

First car I ever fell madly in love with was my brother's Mach II Mustang, then a friend's mom's 65 notchback. My brother's 70 GTO with the 455 HO sealed my fate: from then on I was a die-hard car nut. (he still has the car!)

I agree, the 626 turbo was quite the car. In fact, I have to tell you a little story about that.
Years ago when I was managing used car auctions, I sometimes sold vehicles prior to the auction date. One day an Italian gentleman came in looking to purchase a car for his two sons to share. Naturally, they both made straight for the Firebirds and Camaros with big smiles on their faces. However, their dad had other ideas and pointed them towards the Chevy cavaliers.
After a while it was obvious that we were getting nowhere, so I suggested to them a well looked after four door 626 turbo that I had on the lot. The dad smiled, and the youngsters sighed, but they at least agreed to go for a ride with me.
A short distance from the auction there was a wonderful double bend in the road. I changed down a couple of gears and floored it! As we came out of the last bend, the young man in the back was literally screaming "I want it, I want it"!!
I sedately drove back onto the lot and explained to their dad that they had taken my advice and wisely decided upon the reliable four door Japanese car.
Everyone went home happy!!! :D

That was a great little truck.
It's funny but you don't those see small pickups like that on the road anymore. All the Japanese companies want to go bigger nowadays and compete with the North American manufacturers.
Crazy if you ask me, because those older small pickups are still in high demand if they're in good shape.
In fact, a friend of mine just purchased an immaculate low millage second generation Toyota Hilux 4x4. He paid some real serious money for it, but he used to own one years ago and desperately wanted another one.
Maybe with gas prices the way they are, we will see the little Japanese trucks come back sometime soon.

We always remember that first time behind the wheel of a car :D
My Mom taught me to drive our Mercury Consul, a little English 4 cyl about 1957 vintage. I would drive it up and down our steep driveway. It was a standard shift and the first time I stalled it going up the driveway, I kept rolling backward with each restart until I was backed down to the road. Mom had to come and drive the car back up to the house.
I learned on the Consul, but I took my road test on a 1960 Olds 98, about twice as long a car as the Consul.

See, that's why I like these kinds of postings.
I remember the Ford Consul in England, but I never realized that it was sold over here under the Mercury banner. It's quite amazing to think that Ford were name sharing way back then. I always thought that was something which came about much later.
See, that's why I like this forum...you get to relive old memories, and you get a history lesson thrown in as well.
It's great eh!

You are right, Ford not Mercury!
The Consul looked exactly like this one. That thing would be hard as blazes to get running if it was raining.

We also had a Ford Capri, it was bright red. I really loved that red Capri, never got to drive it though

I always loved the look of the 50's Capri's. almost the perfect blend of American and European design for the time.
It's funny, but I once knew a man who helped design the later Ford Capri's. He told me that when the first Mk1 model was drawn up, so was the Mk2, and the Mk3. If you think about that, those vehicles spanned from the 60's into the 90's. Pretty amazing when you think about it!
Anyway, I enjoyed your pictures Mr Car Guy, thanks!

My first drive was a 1949 Pontiac owned by my great uncle in which he taught me to drive.
The first car I owned was a 4 door dark blue 1938 Plymouth, a $50.oo investment. Still have very f-o-o-o-o-n-n-n-n-n-d-d-d-d memories of the summer of "61" & the joys my friends & I had with that car.

Hey Champ You're really going back a few years there eh! A $50 investment? It would have been a real investment if you had kept it till now!!
Isn't it wonderful to venture down memory lane like this. I love the pictures of the Ford Consul and Capri posted on here. I know that it makes us feel old when we look back at cars like that, but with older classics disappearing every day, pictures and memories might be the only thing that we have soon.
It makes me wonder if the present generation will look back on their first car, the Toyota Prius or Pontiac Wave, with the same fondness? What do you think?
