I'd go for a hybrid. Having a diesel nowadays is not a very wise option. But I'd still keep my diesel cars and wait for the prices to go down...

I am considering one. I've driven the Toyota Camry hybrid, liked it very much. A bit out of my budget at the moment. Maybe a Prius will do, I'll need to check one out.

for the money, this guy would buy an Acura CSX. Great mileage, same price range as a Prius but way more fun to drive. Maybe hybrids will catch on, and I've driven a half dozen of them or so, but i still wouldn't spend my own money on one yet..

I am over 30 but I bought a Camri Hybird about 6 weeks ago.
My first Toyota & my first hybird, I am very impressed with both the car & the gas mileage I am getting, with less than 4000 KM between 37 to 39 MPG.

that is quite good- but do you figure you'll recoup the extra money? Or are just happy to be green minded while driving?

Had a 6 year old Caravan & was due to trade anyway, will save money on gas & nice to be kind to poor ol' Mother Nature.
It is a nice car to drive & drive in, & I will save a lot on trade in value when it comes time to trade. The trade in value is something that most people never consider. Compare the trade in value on my 6 year old Caravan with only 90,000 KM to the value of a Camry with same mileage, kind of makes you wonder why it took me this long to get away from the big 3.

Still far from the 50 MPG avertissed. In winter, mileage will be the same as a regular car.

advertised MPG is almost never achieveable. Out of how many dozens of cars I've tested in the past year or two, only one ever achieved its advertised MPG- the Acadia... strange!

On a 110 KM trip last week I got 5.2L/100KM which I am most happy with considering our roads on PEI plus farm vehicles on the road & part of the trip was through the city of Charlottetown.
For the life of me I can't understand why people want to knock my choice of vehicles, you would be amazed at the negitave comments I put up with especially from some of the owners of gas guzzlers. You want to keep the oil companys rich that is your business but stop knocking me because I have other plans as there are a lot of toys I don't own yet but hope to buy with my gas savings. Lets not forger poor ol' mother nature & the abuse she is taking from pollution.
My current fill-up was 403KM ago and I still show just over half of a full tank, holds 65L. Computor shows 6.2L per 100KM combined driving.
As far as what I paid extra my second choice before I bought this car was a Dodge Grand Caravan which had a sticker price approx $3000.00 more than the Toyota, and if you average more than low to mid 20's MPG you will be doing just about what I got in my old Caravan. Everyone is only to happy to tell me what they get on a trip but never City or combines MPG.
Another thing no-one considers especially big 3 owners is trade in value, my van was near impossible to trade & not worth a hell of a lot of money.

Yep, good ole resale value for you. Toyota should be top-notch for that. I hope you wont be offended by people commenting on your choice. Hybrids are just such a new and misunderstood thing to many folks that it could probably seem that way. Every hybrid I drive, I still get asked often where it gets plugged in. Not as a joke, but because people are largely uneducated on them!

I am not a bit discouraged with all the negative comments, in fact I am most pleased with my new car and decision to purchase it.
Just figured why I got 37 to 39 MPG as I was using an conversion chart for the USA. When you use the right chart it makes a big difference.
Still get a kick out of people staring as I drive around town without the motor running and trying to figure it out.

If you go at 80 km/h top gear on the highway, it very easy to beat the manufacturer numbers.

depends on so many factors. though i think the standards for measuring have been recently made more 'realistic'

If you are doing 80 km/hr , get off the highway before you get someone killed

Sounds to me like you can pass anything on the highway but a gas pump eh Big Block.

I would also consider buying a hybrid type. Ive driven a Toyota Camry as well. XD
I would definitely buy an hybrid. I am not afraid of this technology in anyway. I just don't find any of the hybrid vehicles offered today to fit my needs or my wallet.

Here's how I see it:
If you do lots of city driving, a hybrid is mint! If you do more highway, get a diesel or an efficient 4 cyl kinda like VW's 2.0T.
If you're split between the two, a hybrid could work.
As for me, a diesel!
