Elantra SE
Located west of Metro Toronto, Canada, I have a very sporty 1997 Hyundai Elantra SE, that was the sport edition, moss green with a tinge of gold sparkle in the sunshine from the original metallic paint; the sport suspension--by Porsche, yes, you heard right; leather controls, and a close ratio five-speed (currently reawakened in the Ralliart by Mistubishi)
Aside from the thick leather steering wheel and shifter knob, what I like about this top of the line model is the amazing handling (Porsche style, of course). There is no other car with this fingertip steering feel and amazing balance, best since the Focus; now the Mazda 3 comes close in balance and handling but not feel, but the Elantra is more like the Protege with that visceral connection to the road (of course the Dunlop A2's help). When the pace quickens, the car can be steered with small changes in throttle--accelerate to turn in--which reverses only at the limit when a tiny amount of lift-throttle oversteer makes sure you keep the front end pointed where you're going, and then you can power out in a nice controlled drift. But I did not wear the tires, even so. I replaced them about 145,000 km, which is 90,000miles.
And the power is getting better each year (only the air conditioner or a full load can sap some). Oh, their surprise and frustration when an RX8 or a muscle car has trouble keeping up from the light, and me with only 1/3 throttle, but the car was not abused--original clutch, 60% original rear brake lining left, new high performance front brakes just a month ago at 170,000 kilometers (a tick over 100,000 miles) showing but actually 7% less than that because of odometer error. (translates equally to speedo error, and quite low for an inexpensive car). Part of the credit goes to the close ratio gear set of this model, but still cruises at 2800rpm at 60mph.
This spring, my friend offered me $6000 when it was worth $8000CDN to me. Most people think the car is nearly new because the finish si quite nice. With the used car market depressed, I'll probably have to let it go for under $5,000, because at my age with a bad heart and an 82 yr old mother in the back, I need something a little less exciting (more relaxing)
But it'll be hard to give up this reliable beast, to get something a little more appropriate for a mature male, (damn it!)
