I'm looking at buying a SLT Dakota 2wd, 3.9l V6 with about 130,000 kms on it. I found a few problems with it and they said that they (the dealer) would fix them prior to sale but what concerns me the most is that the timing chain is shot. I've had another friend tell me that it was not uncommon for the 3.9 litre V6 but I think other wise. I find it very strange that the timing chain is so badly worn for the mileage. I have a Ford Taurus with 250,000 kms and the timing chain is well within spec. Any insight with this would be greatly appreciated.

Most vehicles require timing belt replacement at the 100,000klm mark .
It is better to change these early then too late due to the damage caused by a broken or slipping belt . A worn belt that slips , can throw the cam timing off and make the vehicle run poorly and slowly kill your engine . When I had the belt on my Rav 4 changed , they found a leaking water pump , so in the long run , it was cheaper having it changed at the same time as assess to it was easier with the belt assembly already out of the way . |

Chain's shouldn't wear out - The guide, maybe ....
ccaddy: A chain setup is no maintenance, vs. a belt that needs to be changed and jsut so yo uknow, a dealer/shop will suually tell you to change the pump while they are down there... |
