Default jetta tdi tranny

i was at my brother in law's house yesterday, and my nephew was complaining about the cost to replace the tranny in his 2001 jetta tdi at 130 000 kms. just wondering A) if anyone else knows of any history regarding these trannies and B) if the $5000 for a rebuilt through a national chain seems excessive ( he said the volkswagen dealer was twice that for a new one)

Beyond the price... If he can prove that he did maintenance on his car, he should have recourse against VW Canada: he should get the repair done for free or at a reduced cost.

I have heard of these trannies failling but I don't think it is that common.

5000$ is a little high. I would look into a used tranmission instead. If he decides to replace it, he should try and find a garage that will be willing to testify in Court on his behalf against VW Canada.

I would suggest you contact the APA in Toronto for some advice and a garage that will do the necessary (must become a member as well).

Visit apa.ca or call them at 416-204-1444

There should be plenty of warranty left on that tranny. I'd definitely ask some questions!

The manufacturer's warranty ended at 100 000 km. Try the legal route or at least negociate.

Ok. I stand corrected! ops:

It's just that I recalled reading that VW's had a really long powertrain warranty... ten years or something. I guess the 100 000 clicks is the mileage cap, then.

VW has a 12 years corrosion warranty.

In the USA, they had a 10 year powertrain warranty in 1998-99 if I'm not mistaken. You were not wrong, just thinking about the wrong side of the border.

I was going to get a new 2006 Jetta. But have done some research and now will go with Hondas.
