Default ATF?

I drive a 1987 VW Cabriolet. I need to know what kind of ATF (Automatic Transmission Fluid) to put into it and how much. Luckily, my sister drove the car before I owned it and lost the owner's manual. So no luck there. Also, I was wondering if Cabriolets had problems with leaking ATF all over the lawn, as in a recall or something to that effect. Thanks!!

Unfortunately, Cabrios have a habit of leaking many things: fuel, oil, power steering/brake/transmission fluids... I'll see if I can find something...

It's usually all gone by the time you look at the level...

I'm having a harder time than I thought I would finding the information. Maybe you should call a dealer. I'm certain they will be able to give you the info.
