Default 2002 Toyota Camry Door FOB Doesnt work- ECU?

The door FOBs for the 2002 Camry dont work. Bateries replaced , Toyota dealership tried reseating ECU, worked for a week and stopped again. Now doesnt work and Toyota says needs to replace ECU for $1200 or maybe door lock module for $500

1, What is an ECU and how do I find it and its number?
2. Is there a lower cost solution
3 Are they pulling my leg

Any help appreciated :?: :?:

An ECU is the Engine Control Unit, the car's computer or brain. I believe the keys and the ECU could be re-coded. In other words, make the ECU and the keys recognize each other to allow the remotes to work. I would try and take your car to another Toyota dealer. It sounds like they are trying to make a quick $$...

This is a problem with Toyota dealers; they sell great cars but their service is usually sub-par.
