Default subaru 1998-check engine lite stays on-

Mechanic says I need a new computer. This doesn't sound right. Can I take the computer totally out or just drive with the lite on? Thank you

This is not an unusual diagnostic on an older (1990-1999) car. It is possible that something has failed in the CPU or that an exterior source (faulty sensor, ground) has damaged the unit. What you want to make sure is that if it does not fix the problem, that you will be reimbursed or credited the amount of the work and parts.
