A slap in the face
So much has been said and written on Hyundai, that I wasn't sure what I was going to bring forth the next time I was going to be called upon to scribble a few words on the Korean giant. Then, earlier in 2011, they announced the coming of a more powerful V8 that was to sit below the bonnet of the new top-of-the-line Genesis R-Spec.

What else could I do but smile when I first read through the specs and perused photo galleries? Here was a Korean manufacturer thumbing its nose at the Americans and Germans alike: look at us, we're building a V8-powered performance sedan just like you guys make.

Introduced as a 2009MY sedan with a “decent-sized” V8, the Genesis sedan was widely regarded as a handsome car with potential. The new 5.0 R-Spec raises the car to a very sporty looking 4-door people mover.

5.0L V8
What defines any would-be midsize or full-size sport saloon is its engine. Although V8s are slowly disappearing like glaciers, there are still enough around to choose from. Power numbers fluctuate between 370 and 429 hp in this particular category. This range includes regular V8s and not those from SRT, AMG or any other performance division. The R-Spec's 5.0L Tau V8 is good for 429 hp; it is the most powerful V8 of the lot.

A sophisticated transmission is usually another important factor when defining what separates the fakers from the leaders. Gear numbers vary from 5 to 8 depending on the make. The 2012 Hyundai Genesis has 8. Like all of its competitors, the Hyundai is RWD, however, it is not available with AWD as others are. The 2012 Hyundai Genesis 5.0 R-Spec has all that going for it, so it's safe to say that it belongs.
