I generally preferred the M mode, relying on it for most of my brief road test. It allowed me to enjoy proper engine braking upon entering a corner and solid thrust upon exiting said corner. What a treat! This mill never runs out of breath. In fact, it wants more. The limited-slip differential ensures a steady torque distribution, even on a slippery corner exit.

All this from a naturally-aspirated 6.3L AMG V8! No turbo, no supercharger!

Making one with the road
While the SL63 AMG weighs nearly 2,000 kilos, the new active suspension which controls body movement and the new steering system with variable rack ratio (a masterpiece from engineer Franck Schweickwardt) help the car bite the road with fearless tenacity.

The 2009 Mercedes-Benz SL63 AMG bites the road with fearless tenacity.

This machine virtually stops on a dime. I saved a poor little squirrel from certain death with the help of AMG's powerful, intelligent brakes. As soon as I spotted the tiny ball of fur in the middle of the cold roadway, I hammered the brake pedal and the car instantly came to a stop, never losing control and stability while maintaining the occupants fairly in check. The front brakes feature huge 6-piston callipers.

Racy
The AMG grille, spoilers and badges, among other things, create a stark visual separation between the SL63 and the base SL550. The uniquely-styled 19-inch alloys are wrapped by 255/35R19 tires up front and 285/30R19 tires in the back. The latter leave an utterly impressive mark on the pavement.

If you happen to come across a new SL63 AMG, feel free to marvel at its glorious beauty and sheer mechanical genius. No doubt you will dream about it, as this Mercedes is quite an exclusive car, much like a Ferrari. Of course, the price is equally exclusive: around $175,000. Soon at a Mercedes-Benz dealer near you. Enjoy!
