The name Mitsubishi is pretty much known world-wide as an excellent Japanese car manufacturer. Yet here in Canada, they seem to have been struggling to get the recognition that they deserve.

This puzzles me a little, as I come from Europe, where the Mitsubishi name is almost legendary.

The new Outlander is no ugly duckling; in fact it is quite handsome.

I can still remember their Shogun / Montero 4x4 model, which won the European 4x4 of the Year Award for years in succession. It was a great off-roader. I know, I competed in 4x4 trials against many of them, and often came off the loser in my "British" rig.

On the road, it was as good, if not better than most of the other Japanese players.

When the company decided to bring the 2 door version of that model over to North America in the 80's, they joint-marketed it as a Dodge Raider...it totally flopped!!

The funny thing is, the people who did purchase them rave about how good they were, and you still see the occasional one on the road, which is a testament to their longevity.

When Mitsubishi decided to come into Canada under their own nameplate, few had ever heard of them. Although they had been producing vehicles since the 1920's, and have a sound reputation, it was hard, at first, to convince Canadians that they weren't a start-up operation.

Slowly, the word is getting out, and sales are now picking up nicely for the company. I see them "going places" in the near future.

Much of this is being driven by proven products like their sporty Lancer, and their well-priced small SUV, the Outlander. Later this year, the company is even set to launch on us their "world famous" Lancer Evolution 10!

Mitsubishi is also doing very well in terms of new dealership enquiries, with 14 new dealers added in 2006, and another 15 coming this year. Starting a new dealership today doesn't exactly cost "chicken feed", and so there are obviously a few shrewd people in the industry who share my views on the company's future.

The new Outlander will certainly help Mitsubishi achieve their sales goals

Not most powerful V6 in it's class - 2 responses
I would just like to make a correction that the Toyota Rav4 actually has the most powerful V6 in this class of vehicles, with 269 Hp and 246 lb. ft of torque

Re:Not most powerful V6 in it's class
You may well be right. Unfortunately, I quoted that from the handout which they gave me on the day, so I am going to have to look into this further.

I am presently waiting on a call from Mitsubishi's Head Office to clarify this matter. Who knows? Possibility it was a printing error, or maybe there is a better explanation available. As soon as I know the answer to this riddle, I'll let you know.

Official word from Mitsubishi...it is!!!
Here is the official answer from Mitsubishi Head Office...

Vehicle: MSRP: HP: Torque:

Honda CRV $27,700 166 161

Mazda Tribute $23,295 153 152

Nissan X-Trail $26,248 165 170

Suzuki G.Vitara $25,495 185 184

Toyota RAV 4 $29,400 166 165

Mitsubishi $25,498 220 204
Outlander

They therefore quite correctly state that the Mitsubishi Outlander has the most HP and Torque of all sub-30k Japanese compact SUV's.

Not Highest HP among Asian companies - 1 response
But not the highest HP of Asian car makers. The 2007 Hyundai Santa Fe is $28,295 and has an HP of 242.

Re:Not Highest HP among Asian companies
You're dead right! but like they said "Japaneese made compact SUV's priced under 30k".

I'll be honest with you, all this "best in class stuff" drives me bonkers sometimes. Who makes up these classes anyway???

Statistics nowadays are whatever you want them to be. In fact, I have one for you...I was the best-looking and smartest pupil in my class once...

Honest! Everyone else left when the fire alarm went off...I was still fast asleep and didn't notice that they were gone!!! :-)
