Problems include a possibly forgetful transmission control module on automatics which may require re-programming when it starts to deliver hard shifts or engaging the wrong gear. This could be a precursor to some serious transmission trouble- as many owners report having transmission rebuilds or replacements under warranty with fairly low mileage. Automatics, which Infiniti sourced from outside the company, are said to have a defective valve body which causes a shimmy and shake at around 60 kph. The good news here is that the problem seems to be more concentrated on newer models which should still have warranty coverage. If you buy from a used dealer offering an extended warranty, it's probably a good idea to have.

Manual transmissions weren't without their problems either, and owners report grinding or difficulty shifting into third gear. This is associated with clutch and transmission replacement, sometimes after warranty expires. If looking for a used G35, pay special attention to the transmision's shift quality and any unusual sensations or noises.

There's also an issue with cold weather starting in which the starter will fail to engage at all- and may require replacing of the Intelligent Power Distribution Module. Sound expensive? It is- so try and get a used model with a warranty where possible.

If test driving a coupe with Brembo brakes, be sure to listen for excessive brake-pad squeal in reverse, as this requires revised pads and new shims. If you experience some vibration coming from down low in the front of the car, it's probably not the suspension- but a loose engine under-sheild which can catch airflow and send vibrations back to the driver. This piece could have been re-installed improperly after a repair or check-up, for instance.

Appparently, models painted red use a different paint composition than other colors and is more prone to rust. Check around the windshield and where any metal or plastic trim intersects with a painted panel for signs of corrosion.

Recalls are few- dealing mainly with a possibly defective fuel-filler hose which may crack during refueling and result in a leak or a fire. Faulty engine sensors which monitor timing and crank position may also become defective due to heat stress and fail- which can result in reduced performance or a no-start situation. Lastly, a defective taillamp switch could prevent the brake-lights from illuminating. Your nearest dealership should be able to advise you of any recall work that's outstanding on your particular model.

If you're set on the G35, you probably won't regret it- mainly because it's a gateway performance car that proves well made and exciting to drive. Just make sure to have the transmission thoroughly inspected and ask the vehicles previous owner, where possible, if the car in question has shown any signs of vibration or unusual noises, as they may not occur on every drive. If the gearbox checks out and recall work can be performed, you'll likely enjoy this one for years to come.
