Last-gen Malibu gets top marks for mileage, power and value--but pay attention to the front-end on a test drive
Here’s a good example of a successful model re-introduction. Chevrolet brought the Malibu back from the grave in 1997. Shortly after, it started gaining popularity with customers and press alike. Plenty of awards followed. The ‘fifth generation’ Malibu (or first-generation modern Malibu) was sold until 2003-- when the Opel-based 2004 Malibu hit the road.

This sixth-generation Malibu saw the nameplate offered in both a four-door and a five-door wagon variant. The latter was sought after by shoppers needing expanded utility over a standard sedan. With the seventh-generation Malibu now on dealer lots, used car shoppers can expect plenty of selection in the sixth-generation car.

Two engines were available initially. The first was a 2.2 liter Ecotec four cylinder with 145 horsepower. This engine came mated to a four-speed automatic and drove the front wheels. The up-level powerplant was a 200 horsepower, 3.5 liter V6, which also got a four-speed automatic. Manual-mode shifting was available, and the Malibu Maxx wagon was available exclusively with the V6.

Later in the Malibu’s life came a special Malibu SS variant, which was available in both body styles. Under the hood was a 3.9 liter V6 that cranked out 240 horsepower.

Available features included automatic climate control, tilt and telescopic steering, power accessories, remote access and a sunroof. GM’s OnStarsecurity and communications system was on board, as were traction control, ABS, side curtain airbags and an alarm system—depending on the model in question. Power heated seats, leather accents, an auto-dimming rearview mirror and even remote start could all be specified.

More basic Malibu models got an LS or LT designation, while LTZ and SS badges were reserved for the higher-end models.

A check in various online forums shows that owners loved the 2004 to 2008 Malibu’s quiet ride, roominess, style and value. Mileage is highly rated, especially with the 2.2 liter and 3.5 liter engines on board. Of course, owners of the SS models love the acceleration and passing power.
