A Quebecer with some nerve!

Okay, I'm exaggerating -- although barely. True, the new C30 possesses all the ingredients that make up a genuine Swedish car, just like the rest of the Volvo family. Still, it has the soul of a pure Quebecer. How so? Well, the C30 was designed by Montreal-native Simon Lamarre, who's been living in Gothenburg for a couple of years now.

This little Swedish car boasts decidedly sporty looks.

What is the C30 exactly? For one thing, it represents Volvo's venture into the overlooked segment of small urban coupes specifically designed for active young professionals who like to have fun behind the wheel. If this sentence sounds familiar, it's because it also applies to BMW's 3-Series, Volkswagen's GTI and other sporty compacts across the world. So it comes as no surprise that Volvo is pitting the C30 against these models. That said, the Scandinavian newcomer is quite different: first, it's a 4-passenger hatchback (2+2); second, being a true Volvo, it offers a safety-oriented driving experience. Of course, luxury is also in the mix. Actually, the young C30 has nothing to envy to its bigger sisters.

Uncompromised styling
The Volvo C30 mainly stands out because of its unique styling. Whether you like it or not, I made many heads turn while I was driving (well, to tell the truth, the car did). With distinctive lines and shapes, this little wonder attracts a fair amount of attention.

From the front, the C30 is reminiscent of the S40 sedan with the corporate V-shaped grille. However, the back end is the most interesting part. Classic car aficionados will recognize several design cues from the old Volvo P1800 driven by Roger Moore a.k.a Simon Templar in the movie The Saint.

The easy-to-lift full-glass rear hatch offers a generous and convenient access to the cargo area. Inside, you will find most of Volvo's newest design trends, including the famous "floating" console in the middle of the dashboard which highlights the C30's modern approach. The instruments are decently sized and easy to read, while the controls are flawless. So, overall, the package is harmonious and charming.
