Two models, two trim levels

Mercedes-Benz Canada offers two smart models : a coupe and a convertible. The former is available in two trim levels, called "Pure" and "Passion", while the latter only comes in "Passion" trim -- a wise decision considering it's a true made-for-fun car.

Every smart sold in Canada offers lots of interesting standard features, including AM/FM/CD stereo, power windows and remote entry. The Pure model is a stripped-down car and, when you start to add a couple of options like power steering and climate control, you come awfully close to the Passion model's price.

As far as I'm concerned, the Passion coupe offers the best value at $18,250. It comes standard with alloy wheels, climate control, heated seats, power mirrors and a premium audio system. The only option that every buyer should absolutely select, in my mind, is the Dashboard Instruments Package with analog clock and rev counter; at $160, it's a must. Please refer to my comments on the automatic transmission.

Fun convertible
As the very definition of "cute", the cabriolet benefits from significant improvements to the roof mechanism. Drivers can now use the key or the console-mounted switch to retract the top.

There are two steps. First, the roof slides horizontally, all the way back. This step can even be performed on the move, at low speed. The rear window stays in place, which means that visibility remains intact. The other step is to bring the top down towards the tailgate. This time, however, visibility is compromised.

We treated ourselves with a good 70-minute open-top drive on the highway and found out that wind turbulences are reasonable. Since the weather was fairly cool (15^oC), we put the heater on and were very comfortable. The overall quality and driving experience make the smart a fun and entertaining convertible.

As for functionality, I prefer the Passion coupe. Its glass roof allows passengers to enjoy light and sunrays; plus, there's an integrated sliding sunshade. Furthermore, this model offers greater cargo room and a very comprehensive list of standard features.
