The Hyundai Sonata proves that Japan isn’t the only country that can build a successful family sedan. Fresh out of last year’s update and facelift, the 2010 Sonata sees the car fresher looking, more powerful, and more fuel-efficient than ever. The mid-sized sedan segment is one of today’s most competitive-- but Hyundai’s equipped the Sonata for a fight.

Outside, the 2010 Sonata gets a new set of headlamps, tail-lamps and fog-lamps-- all of which are set off by new bumper fascias with available chrome inserts for added flare. New alloy wheels visually complete the package, and the available dual-outlet exhaust hints at the Sonata’s strong side.

Power comes from a standard 2.4 litre four-cylinder engine with 175 horsepower, while a 3.3 litre ‘Lambda’ V6 engine provides enthusiast drivers with 249 ponies for more confident merging and passing. The V6 comes only with a five-speed shiftronic automatic transmission, while a 5-speed manual is available on more basic four-cylinder models.

Sonata’s interior delivers plenty of space and sophistication, alongside plenty of storage and available heated leather seating. An 8-way power-adjustable driver’s seat can be specified, as well as an MP3 compatible ‘Infinity’ stereo system for long-distance comfort and entertainment. Owners frequently travelling out of town can opt for a navigation system, too.

On any trip, Sonata protects its occupants with a slew of standard airbags, an advanced antilock braking system and active front head restraints. A potentially life-saving Electronic Stability Control (ESC) system is available, too.

The safe and sensible 2010 Sonata is ready for test-drives now.
