Good news for North American fans of the Ford Focus ST - unlike its predecessors, the newest iteration of the turbo-charged hatchback will make its way to our shores… but not until 2012.
The top-spec Focus ST will boast a 2.0 litre Ecoboost (turbo-charged) four-cylinder engine producing 247 horsepower and 266 lb.-ft. of torque mated exclusively to a six speed manual transmission. Although it offers ten percent more power and torque than the previous model, the third generation Focus ST promises to cut fuel consumption and emissions by 20 percent.
The iridescent "Tangerine Scream" promises to be a hot little hatch, if its dramatic styling is anything to go by. Visual drama is created by deep character lines, sharp curved edges and a fast, swooping roofline. Notable design features are the wraparound tail lights, twin centrally mounted exhaust outlets, huge trapezoidal front air intake, front spoiler incorporating a deep central splitter framed by smaller bladed intakes, side skirts, rear diffuser and roof spoiler. It rides on 19-inch Y-spoke alloy wheels and has a race-tuned suspension.
The cockpits sports rally-inspired Recaro seats in black leather with gold neoprene trim. In case you missed its sporting intent, there are gauges for turbo boost and oil pressure, a bespoke steering wheel and gear knob featuring the ST logo… and of course, drilled metal pedals.
The new Focus ST is a product of Ford's global development program, representing miles of testing on the Nurburgring, Germany's Autobahn and touring Britain's roads. This is the first of Ford's performance vehicles to be produced for a global market.
