The newest crossover in Volvo’s showroom, the XC60, may also be the safest. Standard equipment on this vehicle, which begins its life as a 2010 model, includes Volvo’s new City Safety, collision avoidance technology.

Volvo is the first manufacturer in the world to provide this type of feature as standard equipment says Volvo Cars President and CEO Fredrik Arp. City Safety can help a driver avoid a low speed impact.

A series of sensors detect when a collision is imminent. If the driver fails to respond, the City Safety system applies the brakes autonomously in an effort to avoid a crash or at minimum, significantly reduce its severity.

In addition to being its newest crossover, the XC60 is also Volvo’s smallest. It’s shorter and lower than its XC90 sibling, but the reduced dimensions are not reflected in reduced performance when the T6 trim level is selected.

Displacing 3.0-litres, the in-line 6-cylinder T6 powerplant will send up to 281 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque to all four wheels while a 6-speed automatic transmission manages the swapping of gears. This performance version of the XC60 is stickered at $49,995.

Less aggressive versions of the XC60 are also available, and for less money. The entry-level XC60 utilizes a front-wheel-drive (FWD) format and a naturally aspirated 3.2 litre in-line 6-cylinder mill capable of generating 235 horsepower and 236 pound-feet of torque and retails for $39,995.

The mid-level XC60 is powered by the same engine but delivers the benefits of all-wheel-drive (AWD) traction. With a price tag of $44,495, this better equipped version of Volvo’s compact crossover supplies leather seating, Bluetooth and BLIS (Blind Spot Information System) as standard equipment.
