Allison transmissions are well respected for their durability, and in this application Allison has supplied a 6-speed unit featuring a tow-haul function and manual shifting that’s conveniently operated via a rocker switch situated next to the grip of the shift lever.

Using the rocker switch to manage gears is simplicity at its finest, allowing the driver to concentrate on more concerning matters, such as a fully loaded trailer.

Multiple functions aid trailering
GM’s StabiliTrak electronic stability control program with trailer sway control and hill-start-assist is supplied as standard Sierra 2500HD equipment. My tester was also equipped with an integrated trailer-brake control system and an exhaust brake function.

The totality of these systems greatly enhances the ability to safely tow a heavy trailer. Although my testing didn’t include this particular chore, I found the exhaust brake function quite useful and interesting. Unlike exhaust brakes on the big rigs, GM’s version doesn’t rattle windows and frighten small children.

It’s a remarkably quiet system that’s push-button activated. It provides exhaust-driven braking that increases along with load; so more weight and momentum begets more braking, which is a welcomed antitheses to gravity when dealing with long descents. And those descents are generally encompassed in long journeys.

Sierra 2500HD on the highway
Like its competitors, the heavy duty Sierra shines on the highway, where its ride comfort really comes to life. I was quite pleased with how smoothly and quietly this stalwart of the road performed. The big diesel settles down once up to speed and becomes an unobtrusive companion that’s ready to surge forth when the need arises.

Passing performance in this big truck is really quite startling, and much more than expected when the pedal hits the deck. And when the brake pedal is the one under pressure, the Sierra dissipates speed with greater prowess than one anticipates from a vehicle of this size and substance.
