Due in dealerships this fall, the Regal sedan will enter the 2012 model year with the much-anticipated GS version. That’s good news.

What’s even sweeter is that the Gran Sport’s 2.0-litre turbo four will generate an impressive 270 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque. Using all the latest ingredients, including direct injection, variable valve timing, a forged steel crankshaft as well as a twin-scroll turbocharger and an intercooler, the Regal GS will possess the firepower to rival the Volvo S60 and the BMW 3 Series.

A 6-speed automatic with manual mode will eventually be available, but the gearbox of choice should be the standard 6-speed manual. GM claims a 0-60 mph time of 6.7 seconds.

Included in the GS will be the Interactive Drive Control System, basically an adjustable suspension setup that offers three modes: Standard, Sport and GS. The new car also gets four-piston Brembo front calipers and 19-inch 5-twin alloy wheels, while 20-inchers will be optional.

At 135 hp per litre, the turbo four in the GS produces the highest specific output of any production engine in GM’s long history.
