In February, GMInsideNews.com reported that the 2012 Chevrolet Impala would see its 3.5- and 3.9-litre V6s as well as its 4-speed transmission replaced by a new powerplant. They reportedly got their hands on some additional specs last weekend.
It looks like the sedan will inherit a 3.6-litre mill generating 302 hp and 252 lb-ft of torque, dispatched by a 6-speed gearbox.
This represents a considerable improvement power-wise, as the 3.5- and 3.9-litre mills produced 211 and 230 hp, respectively. The base version would in fact boast similar grunt as the defunct SS variant and its 5.3-litre V8, while sipping less fuel, which should allow the ageing model to stand up better to the competition, despite looks that have essentially remained unchanged since the 2006 model year.
The Impala and its W-Body platform date back to 1988, and a complete redesign is scheduled for 2013.
