The 2013 Chevrolet Traverse offers lots of room – and then some more. Now in its fifth year, this large crossover continues to win over families with its 7- and 8-passenger configurations. GM has made a number of upgrades for 2013 that should further help the Traverse stand out from competitors such as the Honda Pilot and Ford Explorer.

''The new Traverse is a family vehicle without compromise,'' said Chris Perry, vice president, Chevrolet Global Marketing and Strategy, who also mentioned the words ''clever, capable, and confident.''

The updated design remains in line with the aspirations of the Traverse, which is to be the best and safest family hauler available. Incidentally, OnStar once again comes standard on every model.

On the outside, you'll notice a redesigned hood along with a three-bar upper and two-bar lower grille design. Meanwhile, the taillights and license plate pocket are now positioned in the liftgate, while new 17'', 18'' and 20'' alloy wheels can be specified.

The interior of the 2013 Chevrolet Traverse also got a do-over. There are new higher-grade materials, comfortable seating for up to eight adults, a new centre stack, and available blue ambient lighting. The optional Chevrolet MyLink infotainment system allows users to seamlessly integrate their smartphones for hands-free calling and watch videos on the 6.5'' colour touchscreen when the vehicle is stopped.

One of the most notable improvements is the industry’s first front centre airbag. Mounted on the inboard side of the driver's seat, it maximizes front occupant protection in the event of a side impact. Other safety features include full-length side curtain airbags with rollover protection, Stabilitrak electronic stability control with rollover mitigation technology, a rearview camera, hill start assist brakes, and available side blind zone alert with rear cross traffic alert, to name a few.

There are no changes to report under the hood, so expect the same direct-injected 3.6L V6 engine that produces up to 288 hp and 270 lb-ft of torque (with the dual exhaust system). Intelligent all-wheel drive is optional while towing capacity is rated at 2,358 kg (5,200 lbs). According to GM, the 6-speed automatic transmission controls have been revised to provide quicker and more consistent shifts, and new shock valving has been employed to deliver a smoother ride at lower speeds.

Official fuel economy has yet to be announced, but with the powertrain being unchanged, it should stay pretty close to the 2012 model's 8.4 L/100km on the highway.

The 2013 Chevrolet Traverse offers a choice of four models including LS, 1LT, 2LT, and LTZ. Production will start later this year in Lansing, Michigan. Stay tuned for complete specs and pricing.
