Description: After a period of uncertainty, Chrysler Group announced that their flagship performance car, the Viper, would live on and engineers, designers and developers set to work creating the next-generation of Detroit’s most awesome performance car.

2013 SRT Viper

Now in its fifth generation, the 2013 SRT Viper drops the Dodge badge, picks up extra power, and gets head-turning, street-smart styling that’s more upscale than ever.

Both SRT Viper and SRT Viper GTS models will be available when the model goes on sale later this year. The new car is also stiffer, more luxurious, and more aerodynamic. It’s packed with new features, despite weight reduction that enters triple-digit territory.

Performance? Yes.

How’s 0-100 km/hr in the low 3-second range en route to a mid-11-second quarter mile pass at full throttle that doesn’t call it quits till some 206 miles per hour?

Officials say the new Viper is still “all Viper,” even if it’s now fitted with traction control and upscale feature content. They promise more of the car’s performance is accessible more of the time, and that the Viper is easier to live with than ever before.

Drivetrain:
All 2013 SRT Viper models come powered one way: via an 8.4L handcrafted V10 engine that’s about 25 lbs lighter than the unit it replaces, while achieving 640 horsepower and a tire-liquefying 600 lb-ft of torque.

The Tremec TR6060 6-speed manual transmission has been improved with closer gear ratios and a shorter final drive ratio, as well as a shortened shift throw for quicker gear changes. It’s equipped with rear-wheel drive, of course.

Consider it if: you’re after the most instantly recognizable, potent road car on this side of about $250,000, or if you count yourself among the drooling masses of diehard Viper nuts and have about a hundred grand burning a hole in your pocket. Performance figures and firepower are the name of the Viper’s game.

Skip it if:
you’re after something sensible, easy on fuel or peaceful to drive. If you frequently use Google to find quiche recipes and wear a sweater to keep warm after supper, this is not your car.

Other Notes:
Feature content in the 2013 SRT Viper will include standard lightweight racing seats, Bluetooth, navigation and a Harman Kardon surround sound stereo system. A driver-selectable, two-mode suspension system allows the Viper to be toggled between street and track suspension calibrations at the touch of a button.

Don’t Miss: All 2013 Viper models will come with a steering-wheel-mounted launch-control switch allowing for optimal acceleration from a dig, or to make cool rev-limiter sounds for your buddies at the car show.

The available Track Package shaves 57 lbs from the curb weight while adding two-piece brake rotors and a special wheel and tire combination for reduced unsprung weight. A larger floor pan and more seat travel, including height-adjust, mean this is the largest and friendliest Viper interior yet, despite the weight reduction.

Brake calipers are by Brembo, and the available two-piece rotors come from StopTech.
