Pros: The 2014 Dodge Avenger has a long list of features. In typical American sedan fashion, it also boasts a supple ride and plenty of power (with the optional V6, at least). Pricing is fairly cheap, and reliability has improved of late.

Cons: At the end of its cycle, the Avenger is no superhero -- hot new competitors like the Accord, Fusion, and Mazda6 are. Given its low residual value, buyers should keep it for as long as possible or buy one used. Other complaints include a small trunk opening, numb steering, cheap materials, and dated styling.

2014 Dodge Avenger Price: You can purchase a new Avenger for as little as $19,995 in Canada Value Package trim. Next up is the SXT at $24,495. The most compelling model is definitely the R/T, which retails from $29,495.

2014 Dodge Avenger Fuel Economy: Here, the difference between the 4-cylinder and the V6 is pretty negligible, at least on the highway -- 6.4L/100km vs. 6.8L/100km. In the city, fuel consumption varies from 9.9L/100km to 11L/100km.

Improvements and Changes: No significant changes for 2014.

2014 Dodge Avenger Powertrain: As mentioned, Chrysler offers a choice of two engines, starting with a 2.4L inline 4-cylinder unit that develops 173 horsepower, either through a 4- or 6-speed automatic transmission (the latter comes with a manual mode). On the other hand, the acclaimed 3.6L Pentastar V6 generates 283 horsepower; the only transmission it works with is the 6-speed autobox. No all-wheel drive option appears on the menu.

Cargo Capacity: The Avenger's trunk can barely hold 384 litres of gear -- way below average for a midsize sedan (420 litres). Heck, even the compact Hyundai Elantra boasts a 420-litre trunk.

Safety: Look for the usual in that department, meaning ABS brakes, brake assist, electronic brake force distribution, as well as stability and traction control.

Comparing the 2014 Dodge Avenger: The midsize segment is rife with quality sedans including the Chevrolet Malibu, Chrysler 200, Ford Fusion, Honda Accord, Hyundai Sonata, Kia Optima, Mazda6, Nissan Altima, Subaru Legacy, and Toyota Camry, so the Avenger has a tough time standing out.
