Pros: The 2014 Mazda CX-9 is a great alternative to minivans. If you have three or more kids and need to drive them to their soccer or hockey practice regularly, it will do wonders. The interior is quite functional and flexible, not to mention comfortable, so you'll have no problem taking the whole family on an extended vacation. Good reliability and driving dynamics are icing on the cake.

Cons: The CX-9 is big, heavy, and thirsty. There could be more storage compartments, while the large doors require caution in parking lots.

2014 Mazda CX-9 Price: You can buy a new CX-9 for $33,995 in GS trim. Budget an extra $3,000 for all-wheel drive. As for the more upscale GT AWD, it starts at $44,750.

2014 Mazda CX-9 Fuel Economy: This large crossover burns 12.7L/100km in the city and 8.4L/100km on the highway.

Improvements and Changes: Aside from a revised body colour selection, the company enhanced the GS Luxury Package by adding a Blind-Spot Monitoring System, back-up sensors, and a power liftgate. Meanwhile, the GT gets a voice-activated navigation system.

2014 Mazda CX-9 Powertrain: Under the hood is a 3.7L DOHC V6 engine that produces up to 273 horsepower and 270 lb-ft of torque through a 6-speed automatic transmission with manual mode. As mentioned earlier, an Active Torque-Split All-Wheel Drive system is optional on the base model, and standard on the GT.

Cargo Capacity: The trunk can fit 487 litres of gear, but once you drop the second- and third-row seats, you get as much as 2,851 litres of utility space.

Safety: The 2014 Mazda CX-9 features six airbags with rollover sensor, ABS, brake assist, electronic brake force distribution, stability control, and traction control. A Blind-Spot Monitoring System and back-up sensors are available.

Comparing the 2014 Mazda CX-9: There are plenty of alternatives in the medium-to-large crossover segment including the Chevrolet Traverse, Ford Flex, GMC Acadia, Honda Pilot, Hyundai Santa Fe XL, Nissan Murano, Subaru Tribeca, and Toyota Highlander.
