Pros: The 2014 Mazda2 has sensuous lines and a friendly face. More importantly, it proves fun to drive thanks to dynamic steering and a convenient size. Reliability is commendable, too.

Cons: Dated powertrain components explain its low fuel economy (by small-car standards). Also, considering the competition, the upscale GS model may be a tad expensive for what you actually get.

2014 Mazda2 Price: You can buy a 2014 Mazda2 for as little as $14,450 in GX trim. Move up to the GS, and the price jumps to $18,300. The automatic transmission costs an extra $1,150 in both cases.

2014 Mazda2 Fuel Economy: Expect to achieve 5.6L/100km on the highway and 6.8L/100km in the city with the manual transmission, or 5.8/7.1 with the automatic transmission.

Improvements and Changes: Revised body colour selection, and new interior trim for the GS model.

2014 Mazda2 Powertrain: Under the hood of the 2014 Mazda2 is a 1.5L DOHC 4-cylinder engine that produces a modest 100 horsepower and 98 lb-ft of torque. It can be mated to either a 5-speed manual transmission or a 4-speed automatic.

Cargo Capacity: Most sub-compact cars, and even a few compacts, should take a lesson from the Mazda2 in that department. You'll find 377 litres of cargo space behind the rear seats, and 787 litres behind the front seats.

Safety: The 2014 Mazda2 comes standard with six airbags, front disc and rear drum brakes, ABS, brake assist, electronic brake force distribution, stability control, and traction control.

Comparing the 2014 Mazda2: Small-car buyers should also check out the Honda Fit, Ford Fiesta, Hyundai Accent, Kia Rio, Nissan Versa Note, Scion xD, and Toyota Yaris.
