Pros: The 2014 Subaru Legacy is not a world-class midsize sedan, but it does everything well. Classy and timeless, the Legacy offers a great list of standard features led by Subaru's acclaimed all-wheel drive system. Both the interior and trunk are spacious, while the suspension proves nicely calibrated. Overall, the Legacy makes a bigger statement than most rivals.

Cons:
The turbo engine has been dropped, much to the chagrin of sporty driving enthusiasts. After all, the naturally aspirated 4-cylinder engine is far from delivering class-leading performance. What's more, the look of the audio and navigation interface is questionable.

2014 Subaru Legacy Price: Buyers have a choice of seven trim levels ranging from $23,495 to $36,195.

2014 Subaru Legacy Fuel Economy: Four-cylinder models achieve 6.9L/100km on the highway and 9.9L/100km in the city with the manual transmission, or 6.1/8.4L/100km with the optional CVT. Those with the larger engine are rated at 8.0/11.8L/100km.

Improvements and Changes: The Convenience Package now includes 17'' wheels, fog lights, and a rear spoiler, while the Touring Package also gets a rear spoiler.

2014 Subaru Legacy Powertrain: The base 2.5L horizontally opposed 4-cylinder engine produces 173 horsepower and 174 lb-ft of torque through a 6-speed manual gearbox or a CVT. The optional 3.6L horizontally opposed 6-cylinder mill generates 256 horsepower and 247 lb-ft of torque exclusively through a 5-speed autobox with manual mode.

Cargo Capacity: The 2014 Subaru Legacy's trunk can hold up to 415 litres of gear.

Safety: Occupants are protected by six airbags, ABS, brake assist, electronic brake force distribution, brake override, stability control, and traction control. The EyeSight option, which utilizes two cameras to monitor activity in the road ahead, features Adaptive Cruise Control, Pre-collision Braking, Pre-collision Throttle Management, as well as Lane Departure and Sway Warning.

Comparing the 2014 Subaru Legacy: The midsize sedan segment is rife with compelling alternatives including the Chevrolet Malibu, Chrysler 200, Dodge Avenger, Ford Fusion, Honda Accord, Hyundai Sonata, Kia Optima, Mazda6, Nissan Altima, Toyota Camry, and Volkswagen Passat.
