Pros: The SL-Class is one sexy roadster with road prowess and a fantastic exterior look.
Cons: With only two seats, this isn’t the best family car choice, and you’ll most definitely want to opt for the AMG version, which will cost a pretty penny.
2015 Mercedes-Benz SL-Class Price and Fuel Economy: Like we said above, this little roadster packs quite the punch on the wallet. With three models available, each is equally tempting. Pricing is as follows (base MSRPs):
- 2015 Mercedes-Benz SL 550 Roadster $123,400
- 2015 Mercedes-Benz SL 63 AMG Roadster $162,500
- 2015 Mercedes-Benz SL 65 AMG Roadster $242,500
As far as fuel economy goes, well, first off you’re not buying this vehicle to be economical in any way. There are two engines, a V8 and a beefy V12. In the SL 550 you’ll see numbers in the 13.8L/100km range in the city, 9.5L/100km on the highway. Opt for the ramped up SL 65 AMG and those numbers change to 16.7L/100km in urban settings, and 11.2L/100km on the open road.
Powertrain: Now, about those two engines. In the SL 550 the V8 Bi-turbo unit produces 429 fabulous horses along with 516 lb-ft of torque. And while the same V8 Bi-turbo unit is housed in the SL 63 AMG it’s tuned to push out 577 horses and 664 lb-ft of torque. Then there’s the V12 … a 36V bi-turbo mill that churns out 621 horsepower and a whopping 737 lb-ft of torque.
0-100km/hr times range from 4.6 seconds to 4 seconds flat. All models feature rear-wheel drive and power is controlled via Merc’s 7G-TRONIC 7-speed automatic transmission (with the AMG version in the two models sporting the same three letters, naturally).
Changes and Improvements: No major upgrades or changes were made to the 2015 Mercedes-Benz SL-Class lineup.
Cargo Capacity: Not that it really matters with this vehicle, but with the roof up the Mercedes-Benz SL-Class offers up 504 litres of trunk space. Retract the roof and that space decreases to 364 litres.
Safety: The 2015 Mercedes-Benz SL-Class Roadster comes equipped with all manner of standard safety features and airbags, as well as active blind spot assist and active lane keeping assist.
