Have you walked into a Mazda dealership recently or shopped online for your next 3-row family hauler on Mazda’s website? One of the things on your screen does not belong there…

If you’ve been following the car bizz a little, you know that Mazda and KODO are making serious waves. The final piece of the puzzle will soon be in place thanks to this crossover concept.

“KOERU,” means “exceed” or “go beyond” in Japanese and by the looks of it, the CUV certainly goes beyond what we’ve become accustomed too in the highly competitive crossover segment. The essence of KODO can be spotted in the ‘ute’s flowing roof- and beltlines as in the powerful front fenders. The proportions and overall dynamic shape are common, and appreciated, throughout Mazda’s utility vehicle line, most notably on the delightful CX-3.

Other than the fact that the production version of the Koeru will receive a full battery of SKYACTIV goodness, specifications are scarce and are limited to the following:

Overall length x width x height — 4,600mm × 1,900mm × 1,500mm
Wheelbase — 2,700mm
Seating capacity — 5 people
Tires — 265/45R21
Major systems/technologies — i-ACTIVSENSE and Mazda Connect

The one promise Mazda is making about this new crossover is that it will provide a true Jinba-ittai driving experience. In other words, it will be a true pleasure to drive like all other Mazda products, including the new Toyota Yaris sedan…

The production version of the Koeru will be unveiled at the upcoming Los Angeles auto show in mid-November and if everything goes according to plan, I may even get a chance to dive it right around the same time.
