Pros: Looking for class and sophistication in a sportier package for your executive needs? Then the 2016 Mercedes-Benz E-Class Coupe or Cabriolet is the car for you.

Cons: It’s pretty hard to complain, here. Well, there’s no diesel engine offered in North America, no AMG coupe model, and no all-wheel drive available with the droptop.

Price and Fuel Economy: There are only two E-Class Coupe models to choose from. The pricing is as follows (base MSRPs):

  • Mercedes-Benz E 400 4MATIC at $64,500
  • Mercedes-Benz E 550 at $74,500

The former burns 8.3L/100km on the highway and 11.8L/100km in the city, while the latter achieves 7.5 and 11.9L/100km, respectively.

In the case of the E-Class Cabriolet, pricing is as follows:

  • Mercedes-Benz E 400 at $71,300
  • Mercedes-Benz E 550 at $81,500

Fuel consumption amounts to 7.1L/100km on the highway and 10.6L/100km in the city for the E 400. The ratings are 7.8 and 12.2L/100km for the E 550.

Changes and Improvements: No major changes have been made to the E-Class for 2016, as evidenced by the negligible $300 price increases over the 2015 models.

Powertrain: There are two engines (one in each model) available once again. In the base E 400 you’ll find a 3.0L twin-turbo V6 that produces 329 horsepower and 354 lb-ft of torque. In the E 550 sits a fabulous 4.6L twin-turbo V8 that will churn out 402 horsepower and 443 lb-ft of torque.

Across the board, a 7G-TRONIC PLUS 7-speed automatic transmission is found. Only the E 400 Coupe boasts Mercedes’ 4MATIC all-wheel drive system, while the others feature rear-wheel drive for an even sportier feel behind the wheel.

Cargo Capacity: It is possible to load up to 450 litres of cargo in the E-Class Coupe. Meanwhile, the E-Class Cabriolet has a 390L trunk which gets down to 300L when you open the roof.

Safety: Just like the sedan, both the coupe and cabriolet are equipped with all manner of standard safety equipment and airbags along with DISTRONIC PLUS with Steer Assist (to keep you in your lane), BAS PLUS with Cross Traffic Assist, PRE-SAFE Brake with Pedestrian Detection, PRE-SAFE PLUS (which assesses a rear-end impact with rear sensors and adjust occupant protection accordingly), ATTENTION ASSIST, and COLLISION PREVENTION.

Direct Competitors: BMW 6 Series Coupe and Cabriolet, Audi S5/RS 5 Coupe and Cabriolet, Jaguar F-Type Coupe and Convertible, Porsche Cayman S/Boxster S.
