A petition signed by members of the Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers is asking the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to allow full camera-based rearview systems in place of traditional outside mirrors.
They claim these alternatives would help reduce drag and improve fuel economy.

With the NHTSA's proposed rule to make backup cameras standard on all new light vehicles by 2018, additional cameras could increase safety by eliminating blind spots.

For now, the technology can only be found on a small number of concepts at auto shows.

The NHTSA has yet to comment on the petition.
