Toyota has officially launched the world’s first all-electric SUV.
Unveiled yesterday at the 26th International electric vehicle symposium, in Los Angeles (Cal.), the electric Toyota RAV4 can go anywhere within a 160 km radius and takes only 6 hours to recharge.
"We want the best of both world," said Group Vice President and General Manager Toyota Division Bob Carter. "We want the efficiency of an electric-powered motor with the known capabilities of our RAV4 SUV." According to Toyota, the electric RAV4 might even be more performant than the fuel-powered V6 version, thanks to the Tesla Motors power-plant. In "Normal" settings, the SUV will reach 100 km/h in 8.6 seconds, and a top sped of 137 km/h. In "Sport", it drops 1.6s from 0 to 100 and goes 23 km/h faster. Retail price for the fully-loaded American version is $49,800. Toyota hopes to sell 2,600 units in the States, some time in the next three years, but has not yet revealed its plans for the Canadian market.
