It might be coming a year late, but Canada's first full-size 100% electric bus is ready to hit the streets of Laval, Quebec for a trial period of a few months.

The tests will help determine how weather and road conditions affect range. The Société de Transport de Laval (STL) would like its electric bus to cover up to 150 kilometres on any given day and fully charge in no more than four hours.

Engineered in the U.S. by DesignLine, the vehicle was originally scheduled to launch in early 2012 but had to face various delays, like when it came to receive a road certification from Transport Canada.

The STL will hold a press conference on Monday to give more details.

A Quebec-based company called Nova Bus has also developed an electric bus prototype, but this one has yet to hit the road.

Meanwhile, eight electric minibuses have been operating in Quebec City for nearly five years.
