The Canadian auto industry will receive an extra $250 million as part of the renewed Automotive Innovation Fund, the Harper administration announced last Friday at Ford's Oakville assembly plant in Ontario.

The five-year renewal isn't devoid of controversy, however. It comes just two weeks after General Motors confirmed that Chevrolet Camaro production will move from Oshawa to Lansing Grand River, Michigan in 2015.

Canadian Auto Workers (CAW) president Ken Lewenza would have liked specific conditions for automakers to access these funds, such as hiring new workers or protecting current jobs. He fears that some of the workforce will be laid off, like when Ford last received financial support for its Oakville plant.
