GMC unveiled a new concept version of their Denali pickup truck today at the Chicago Auto Show. Boasting a 50 percent increase in fuel economy over a comparable machine, the Denali XT Hybrid concept delivers all the usability of a GMC truck while helping owners to visit the fuel pumps less frequently. The muscularly styled concept is labeled by GMC as a hybrid Sport Utility Truck (SUT).
A unique unibody architecture enables an interesting design and efficient performance for this latest concept. The car-like unibody architecture is generally lighter than traditional truck frame construction.
There's a lot going on under Denali XT's hood. A new and more efficient 4.9 litre version of GM's smallblock V8 is at work- packed full of gas-saving technologies like direct injection and Active Fuel Management (AFM). The latter feature is currently available in production models, and can intelligently disable selected cylinders in order to burn less fuel. The revised powerplant is tied into GM's 2-mode hybrid system for great fuel economy and power. With 2-mode on board, Denali XT can drive on electricity alone at speeds up to 30 miles per hour. Despite XT's green intentions, V8 performance and torque is always just a quick press of the pedal away. "Like all GMCs, the Denali XT is functional and capable, but it blends those traits with a more efficient and sporty driving experience," said Jim Bunnell, GMC general manager. "It is a vehicle that exemplifies GMC's engineering excellence, as well as GM's commitment to hybrid and advanced technologies."
