Daily-deal website giant Groupon offered its first-ever car coupon today, a good indication that the company is starting to expand their offers to bigger, more-valuable items.

For $199 USD, you could buy a coupon that knocks $500 off the purchase or lease of a new or used vehicle at the LaFontaine Automotive Group in Detroit.

While it may seem like a significant step for Groupon, some experts aren’t convinced that consumers will get a lot out of a daily deal. In an article written by Alistair Barr of the Reuters agency, Ben Edelman, associate professor at Harvard Business School, says “This voucher is for a very small portion of the cost of a car or lease, so it’s basically an agreement to buy or lease a car from LaFontaine”.

Mr. Edelman cited that in restaurants and spas, prices are already posted, while they aren’t necessarily so in a car dealership, which makes a coupon a vague proposition. “They need to fix that before this part of the model can take off”, said the professor.

We’re pretty certain you don’t need a coupon in order to negotiate a $300 rebate on a new or used car.
