Rally: Volkswagen could enter the FIA World Rally Championship

According to web site rallye-magazin.de, German car manufacturer Volkswagen could enter the FIA World Rally Championship in a not-so-distant future. The Volkswagen name was also linked to a possible graduation to Formula 1, but it would make fart more sense for VW to enter the world of rallying.

Like Finland before it, Germany is a specialised rally, which favours drivers with a particular skill set. Unsurprisingly, those drivers with bags of European tarmac rally experience tend to do well, as do those with the ability to read grip levels in mixed conditions. Add previous form into the equation, however, and one man stands head and shoulders above the rest.

A perfect race in perfect conditions saw Peugeot score a 1-2 finish at the fourth race in the 2008 Le Mans Series at the Nurburgring. In front of 22,000 spectators, Stephane Sarrazin and Pedro Lamy led home their team-mates Marc Gene and Nicolas Minassian, the two diesel-powered prototypes crossing the line 16 seconds apart after 1000kms.

Swiss racing driver Marcel Fässler gets the chance to contest two races in the American Le Mans Series with the turbo diesel Audi R10 TDI. The former DTM driver starts at Road America (9 August) and Detroit (30 August) for Team Audi Sport North America as teammate to Emanuele Pirro.

The Subaru of Indiana Automotive (SIA) plant resembles many other modern, American assembly plants. With an annual production of 147,148 units in 2007, it's not the largest one, but it does stand out in a very special way: it's one of the cleanest, if not THE cleanest. The plant, which assembles Subaru Legacy and Outback sedans and station wagons (including the new PZEVs), Subaru Tribeca SUVs and Camry sedans, for its Japanese partner, Toyota, achieved zero-landfill status in 2004.
