General Motors today announced that the production of the next-generation Chevrolet Impala will move to the Detroit-Hamtramck assembly plant alongside the new Malibu and the Chevrolet Volt/Opel Ampera electric cars.
The automaker is investing $69 million in tooling and equipment to support the Impala. Back in April, another $121 million went to the future production of the Malibu.
The move will add two shifts and about 2,500 jobs to the 1,121 existing ones.
Last week, GM announced that the Detroit-Hamtramck plant will exclusively build Volt and Ampera models for the rest of the year. The production goal for 2012 is up to 60,000 units, with three quarters of those to be sold in the United States.
