Coinciding with the premiere of the third instalment of the Transformers movie franchise, General Motors has announced today it will be giving consumers around the world the chance to get their hands on a special edition of the Chevrolet Camaro, in honour of the endearing Autobot Bumblebee.

Buyers of the yellow 2LT (312-hp V6) and 2SS (426-hp V8) versions of the coupe can order the 2012 Transformers Special Edition package for $3,000.

It adds black racing stripes, a unique spoiler, black 20-inch wheels shod in high-performance tires and a few Autobot logos on the wheels and front fenders.

The cabin will be draped in black leather, highlighted by yellow stitching on the instrument cluster, centre console, armrests and seats. Autobot logos will also be embroidered on the headrests and centre console.

Buyers can upgrade to 21-inch wheels and a black ground effects package. Chevrolet dealers will start taking orders in July, and the first units will be delivered to Canada and the US in September.

The Transformers franchise is more or less synonymous with the rebirth of the mythical muscle car, as the first two movies contributed to its comeback after a long seven-year absence.

Unfortunately, this Camaro won’t be transforming itself to save the world, bypass traffic jams or take revenge on the bad guys hogging the fast lane at 80 km/h!
